Enbridge has been chosen by Imperial Oil Ltd. to build a pipeline to transport blended bitumen between the Kearl oil sands project and Enbridge’s existing Cheecham Terminal which connects with existing pipeline transportation systems. The Cheecham Terminal is approximately 70 km south of Fort McMurray.
Project Overview
- One pump station at the Kearl oil sands project pipeline initiation point.
- Approximately 140 km pipeline with a diameter of up to 914 millimetres (36 inches) to transport blended bitumen from the Kearl project site to Enbridge Pipelines (Athabasca) Inc. existing Cheecham Terminal approximately 70 km south of Fort McMurray. An initial pipeline capacity of approximately 200,000 barrels-per-day (bpd) will be required for Phase 1 of the Kearl project.
- Construction and operation of two 300,000-barrel tanks and related pumps and meters at Cheecham Terminal, where the new pipeline would connect to the Waupisoo Pipeline.
The 380-km Waupisoo Pipeline is an existing Enbridge Pipelines Inc. pipeline system designed to carry petroleum products south from Cheecham Terminal to Edmonton-area terminals.
