Enbridge - Where energy meets people

Environment

Environmental performance is a key indicator of success for Enbridge. We actively pursue ways to minimize our impact on the environment, and support initiatives that help us protect our air, land and water sources. We also invest in programs that promote conservation and awareness of environmental issues, and organizations that develop new technologies, including alternative and renewable energy sources, to reduce environmental impact.

As such, we are involved in the Natural Legacy Program, a partnership that provides Enbridge with an opportunity to demonstrate our ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship, habitat remediation and protection. We do this through initiatives such as elementary educational programs, and the planting and care of native trees and plants throughout urban and rural areas along Enbridge rights-of-way (ROW).

Enbridge operates the program with environmental/conservation partners and employee volunteers dispersing the funding across Canada and the United States.

In 2009, Enbridge committed to investing $550,000 in the program.

The environmental/conservation partners currently partnering with the Natural Legacy Program include:

  • Tree Canada – A not-for-profit, charitable organization established in 1992 that provides education, technical assistance, resources and financial support through working partnerships to encourage Canadians to plant and care for trees. These efforts help to reduce the harmful effects of carbon dioxide emissions. Tree Canada is a leader in promoting the value of urban forests in Canada.
  • The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) – A private, non-profit organization working for the direct protection of Canada’s biodiversity through the purchase, donation, or placing of conservation easements on ecologically significant lands.
  • Ducks Unlimited Canada – A national, private, non-profit organization committed to wetland conservation for more than 65 years. Conservation efforts take many forms including on-the-ground work guided by the wetland and environmental research, changing policy in favour of wetland and habitat conservation, and delivering wetland and environmental education programs to teach Canadians about wetlands and the need to conserve them.
  • Trout Unlimited Canada – Founded in Montreal in 1972 due to a growing response to challenges to freshwater and coldwater fisheries occurring at that time. Trout Unlimited Canada is based on the model established by Trout Unlimited in the U.S. Their volunteer-driven, member based resource conservation and commitment to hands-on activity has been followed ever since.
  • The Alberta Emerald Foundation – Celebrates and showcases environmental leadership in Alberta, setting an example of environmental excellence for all to follow. The foundation shows how creative thinking and innovation in environmental management systems, technologies and education programs have helped Alberta balance its growth and resource development with the preservation of our environment.
