Enbridge’s relations with Aboriginal and Native American people are extensive. More than 60 First Nations communities are located along the Enbridge right-of-way in Canada alone. As Enbridge’s network expands, the breadth and depth of these relationships will grow.
Our Aboriginal and Native American Policy directs how we develop mutually beneficial relations with Aboriginal and Native American communities close to or affected by our operations.
Enbridge’s policy identifies key principles for Aboriginal relations:
- respect for legal rights, traditional ways and land
- heritage sites
- environment
- traditional knowledge
This policy promotes the understanding of, and sensitivity to, Aboriginal and Native American people and the issues important to them. It is designed to ensure a consistent, thorough approach to consultation and engagement with these groups.
Enbridge strives to create opportunities that are aligned with the aspirations of the Aboriginal or Native American communities affected by our business. This often leads to partnerships and sponsorship of educational and training programs, employment-opportunities initiatives and other capacity-building efforts.
We are committed to forthright and sincere consultation with Aboriginal and Native American people about projects that affect them. We aim to develop mutual understanding through open, timely two-way communication.
