Alberta Saline Aquifer Project

Project Overview
The Alberta Saline Aquifer Project (ASAP) is an industry initiative being led by Enbridge to identify deep saline aquifers in Alberta that could be used in a carbon dioxide sequestration pilot project. Saline aquifers are underground formations containing brine or salt water that is not suitable for agricultural purposes or for drinking.
ASAP will be rolled out in three phases:
Phase I will focus on identifying specific locations in Alberta that would be suitable for storing carbon dioxide on a long-term basis. It will also involve preparing an application to Alberta's regulatory agencies for the leasing, construction and operation of a saline aquifer project.
Phase II will be conducted based on the results of Phase I. It will involve developing a pilot project, receiving all the necessary regulatory approvals, and actually injecting carbon dioxide into the identified aquifers. The pilot project will give Enbridge and the other project participants the opportunity to test the technologies we will be using, and to demonstrate that these technologies are safe and reliable.
Phase III will involve expanding the pilot project to a large scale, long-term commercial operation.
So far, 35 organizations are participating in Phase I of the project.
